Take Your Education to the Next Level
The Career Compass™ Certified Professional program allows students to go above-and-beyond, show their commitment to their future careers, and help each become a more well-rounded candidate upon graduation.*
The program consists of seven certification activities that are related to job placement:
Building Your Network
They say it is all about who you know. Even if you are starting from scratch, we can help you generate ideas for how to build your professional network by working with your peers. Students who complete this activity will complete a list of network contacts to share and finalize with their Career Development advisor.
Dress for Success
First impressions count. We help you learn the differences between professional and unprofessional clothing in a variety of different scenarios. By the end of this activity, you will attend a mock interview while dressed in professional business attire.
The idea behind the elevator speech is simple: What would you say if you only had a 15 second elevator ride with someone you were looking to impress, professionally? We help you put your best foot forward by crafting a speech based on your skill set. When you can quickly and confidently state your career goals and skills, it helps others understand how they can help you - or hire you.
Understanding how to present your academic work and other achievements to potential employers could help you get noticed. Students who complete Portfolio Development will learn how to develop their portfolios and present finished portfolios to an advisor.
Social Media Presence
In this activity, we explain how to manage your social media presence to help, not hurt, your job search. You will learn the importance of posting responsibly on social media and the professional benefits of powerful social tools like LinkedIn.
Preparing for the Interview
Practice makes perfect. With this activity, we give you the opportunity to practice your interview skills so when the perfect job opportunity comes along, you will be ready for the interview process. Students will participate in a speed interviewing activity and have several months to complete three mock interviews.
Learn how to critique resumes from an employer's perspective and spot and avoid common resume mistakes. By the end of the activity, you will have completed your own resume and have it reviewed by an advisor.
With each activity a student completes, he or she will be awarded a corresponding Career Compass™ Certified Professional pin. Students who earn all seven pins will become Career Compass™ Certified Professionals.
This program is not required and involves out-of-class components. Graduates interested in receiving information about any of the seven activity areas can contact Career Development to set up a seminar session.
